Russian Daniil Medvedev, world number 3, dominated his compatriot Karen Khachanov (N.16) 6-3, 3-6, 6-3 in the quarter-finals of the ATP 500 tournament in Vienna on Friday. In the semi-final on Saturday, he will challenge the Greek Stefanos Tsitsipas, winner of the surprising Croatian Borna Gojo (N.77) 7-6 (7/4), 7-5. The 7th player in the world will be playing his sixth semi-final of the season on this occasion, the 46th of his career.
In the other semi-final, his compatriot Andrey Rublev (5th), winner in three sets of the German Alexander Zverev (10th), will face the Italian Jannik Sinner (4th), who beat the American Frances Tiafoe (14th) in two rounds.
Title holder and number 1 seed, Medvedev had to work against heavy strikes from Khachanov. But more consistent, and finding better areas, the former world number one made the difference in the third set. Aged 27, Medvedev, winner of the US Open in 2021, is on his way to lifting his 6th trophy of the season, which would be his 21st since his debut on the ATP circuit in 2014.
