Tennis: Berrettini joins Carballes in final in Marrakech

Matteo Berrettini (135th in the world) qualified on Saturday for the final of the ATP 250 tournament in Marrakech where he will face the reigning Spaniard Roberto Carballes (64th).

The Italian won 6-7 (4/7), 6-3, 6-2 in the semi-final against Mariano Navone (60th, seeded N.7). The former world number 6, aged 27, returned from injury less than a month ago, will therefore play his first final since that of October 2022, lost in Naples against his compatriot Lorenzo Musetti.

The 2021 Wimbledon finalist will have the opportunity to add an eighth title to his record in the thirteenth singles final of his career, seven of which were contested on clay. Since 2022 and his last final in Naples, Berrettini has had a series of physical problems (hand, ankle, abdominals) preventing him from returning to his best level.

He will be facing a Moroccan clay court specialist, in the person of Roberto Carballes, who will try to win the Marrakech tournament for a second consecutive time. The Spaniard was more expeditious to dismiss the Russian Pavel Kotov (68th) 6-4, 6-2. Aged 31, he will try to win a third title on the main circuit on Sunday.
