Rugby: Jonny May, former England star winger, to leave Gloucester

Gloucester announced on Tuesday that ex-England international winger Jonny May will leave the Premiership club at the end of the season. The 34-year-old, who made his debut at Gloucester 15 years ago, returned there in 2020 after three seasons at Leicester. May, who is due to make his farewell appearance against Newcastle on Saturday, has been linked with a move abroad by the English media.

Regarded at the peak of his career as one of the fastest wingers in the world, he scored 73 tries in 191 matches for the south-west England club. In selection, he is the second highest try scorer in the history of the England XV behind Rory Underwood, with 36 tries in 78 matches. He retired from international football after last year's World Cup.

“There is no doubt that Jonny leaves as a true legend of Gloucester Rugby,” said George Skivington, the club’s director of rugby. “He will be remembered for his countless tries, his finishing ability and his raw speed, which was unrivaled,” he added.

“But what people on the outside don't see is the hard work and attention to detail that Jonny puts in behind the scenes to make him one of the best try scorers in the world” , emphasized Skivington.
