At Roland Garros
The announcement had the effect of a bomb in the corridors of Roland-Garros just before 10:30 p.m. “Gaël Monfils is going to hold a press conference”, indicated the organization of the tournament. Looking crestfallen, the Frenchman actually appeared completely unexpectedly in a room when Novak Djokovic had just finished on the Philippe Chatrier court against Marton Fucsovics. The Parisian has announced terrible news: his withdrawal from the match against Holger Rune due to a left wrist injury.
"I have a partial rupture of the TFCC (the triangular ligament of the carpus, editor's note) of the left wrist. Yesterday (against Sebastian Baez, editor's note) I was in pain, I called the physio for two seconds but I handled myself and told myself that I didn't necessarily need it. I finished the match with a lot of adrenaline and I came to the press conference afterwards after putting on ice, ”explained the Frenchman first.
The condition of the wrist unfortunately did not improve overnight. “This morning I got up and took inflammatory drugs. We hit the ball a bit and I was in pain. We had tests but the doctor was not sure of the diagnosis and finally, we did an MRI to be sure. And his response was to say, 'We're not playing'."
Gaël Monfils (36), who had been sidelined from August 2022 to March 2023 due to a right foot injury, does not yet know the severity of his injury. “We have to redo an examination to know the exact deadline. If it's a few weeks it's not huge. It can be very fast as longer but a priori, it is a partial rupture. If it had been a complete break it would have been more serious, ”added the player who falls from a height after his epic match against the Argentinian on Tuesday. “I don't show it too much but there is more than disappointment because I have how many Roland-Garros left to play. I learned the news thirty minutes ago and for the moment I have to digest”, he concluded.
