Rally: Ogier in pursuit of Rovanperä in Sardinia

Frenchman Sébastien Ogier, engaged this season in a partial program with Toyota, has an opportunity to pick up the WRC World Championship standings this weekend in Sardinia, after seeing his teammate Kalle Rovanperä take off thanks to his victory in Portugal . In the absence of Ogier, the Finnish defending champion flew over the Portuguese round and made a big splash by scoring 30 points.

Rally Italy, the sixth round of the season out of 13, will be his fourth event for the Frenchman and he goes into it 29 points behind his team-mate and 12 behind the Estonian Ott Tänak, who took fourth place in the Portugal driving his Ford. The eight-time world champion, winner in Monte-Carlo in January and in Mexico in March, finished third in his last race in April in Croatia after suffering two punctures and several penalties.

As world championship leader, Rovanperä will however have the disadvantage of starting first on the Sardinian dirt roads and therefore of having to “sweep” the track before the passage of his opponents.

“Of all the rallies on the calendar, I think this was perhaps the trickiest for me. If the weather is hot and dry, as is usually the case in Sardinia, it can be very difficult to clear the road there. Perhaps even more so this year with the 50 km special to be covered on Friday. It will be a demanding weekend,” anticipates the Finn. Ogier, who has already won four times in Sardinia (2013, 2014, 2015, 2021), will be in ambush and has a good shot to play to revive the championship.

“After missing Portugal, we will have a slightly better starting position this time, but it will still be a difficult challenge, especially with this long 50 km stage planned by the organisers. Frankly, I like this challenge, it adds a little salt to this rally and the need to manage the tires, “said the 39-year-old Frenchman.

The event will start on Thursday with the “Shakedown” then the first special and will end on Sunday with the traditional “Power Stage”, which earns points for the world championship classification. In total, the drivers will compete in 19 stages totaling 322.75 kilometers on the Sardinian tracks.
