Paris 2024 Olympics: English gymnast Whitlock will retire after the Games

The Englishman Max Whitlock (31 years old), Olympic champion on pommel horse in Rio de Janeiro and Tokyo, also gold medalist on floor in Rio, will defend his title on pommel horse in Paris in August for what would be his fourth Games.

After opening up about his mental health struggles following the Tokyo Olympics and taking an 18-month break, he announced his plans to retire. “This decision is the right one. For my last Olympic Games, it's very, very strange to talk about it and it's almost difficult to express what it's like. “It’s a very good state of mind to say to yourself that I’m going to give everything I have,” he told the BBC in comments reported by Reuters.

Whitlock also won three bronze medals at the Olympics - all-around in Rio, team and pommel in London 2012.
