Paris 2024 Olympic Games: Frenchman Mamadassa Sylla wins his ticket for the Games in Greco-Roman wrestling

Frenchman Mamadassa Sylla secured his ticket to the Paris Olympic Games by reaching the final of the Greco-Roman wrestling qualifying tournament on Friday in Baku. Sylla, winner in the semi-final of the Pole Gevorg Sahakyan (-67 kg), becomes the first French qualifier in the discipline. He joins his compatriot Koumba Larroque, qualified in freestyle wrestling since the Worlds last September.

Sylla, 30, had replaced the French number 1, Gagik Snjoyan, at the last minute, who had withdrawn for non-sporting reasons. Of Armenian origin, the latter had to decide to give up on the competition played in Azerbaijan to reassure his family, worried about his safety due to the conflict which continues between the two countries.

The two other Frenchmen entered on Friday, Léo Tudezca (-60 kg) and Ibrahim Ghanem (-77 kg) were beaten as soon as they entered the fray. They will have one last chance to secure their place for Paris in May during the last TQO in Türkiye.
