Ligue 1: “I did not try to justify myself”, Jonathan Clauss returns to the criticisms of OM leaders

A (very) difficult time. At the start of 2024, Jonathan Clauss was publicly criticized by the leaders of Olympique de Marseille, with the latter questioning his involvement. Since then, things have been better for the right-back, currently with the Blues for the two friendly matches against Germany (0-2) and Chile (Tuesday, 9 p.m.). This Sunday, the 31-year-old defender had the opportunity to look back on this very special episode. “I did not try to justify myself because I felt that the most important thing was to respond on the ground. That's just what I wanted to do. It’s obviously touching, but it in no way takes away from the path that I had drawn in my head,” he declared in an interview broadcast on the Telefoot show.

In this difficult moment, the ex-RC Lens player was notably able to count on the support of Didier Deschamps, the coach of the France team: “It's obviously something very positive when the coach calls you for you slip in a few words of support. If he takes the trouble to tell me this kind of thing, I need to be even calmer and more concentrated on the pitch,” confided the Marseillais.

Jonathan Clauss, who missed the last World Cup in Qatar, seems well on his way to appearing in the Blues list for Euro 2024 in Germany. But, for the moment, he does not prefer (yet?) to project himself: “We must not focus on the Euro and say to ourselves that, because we are called up today, we are sure to make the Euro. My participation will be if I perform well at OM above all. I try to do the maximum,” he said. Returning to play this Saturday evening against the Mannschaft, Jonathan Clauss could well start this Tuesday against Chile. Will he manage to convince (permanently) the coach to take him to Germany?
