Coach Diego Simeone, in office since December 2011 at Atletico de Madrid, has extended his contract until June 2027 with the club, currently 4th in the Spanish championship, its managers announced on Thursday.
“The Argentine coach is the one who has managed the most matches of our team in the history of the club (642), the most successful - with eight titles - and the one who has coached the same team in La Liga for the most seasons consecutive. Diego Pablo Simeone will remain the coach of our club until June 30, 2027,” the Madrid club said in a press release.
Since Simeone, 53, has been at the head of the Colchoneros, “our institution has experienced one of its most successful periods”, Atletico further pleads, mentioning two championships won (2013/14 and 2020/21), a Copa del Rey (2013), two Europa Leagues (2012 and 2018), two European Super Cups (2012, 2018) and a Spanish Super Cup (2014).
Added to these achievements are two Champions League finals, in 2014 and 2016. “So many exploits which allowed us to reach second place in the UEFA club rankings,” he recalls.
In the 642 matches he has on the Madrid bench - more than Luis Aragones' 612 - Simeone has obtained 380 victories and only 18% defeats.
