Former Formula 1 driver Gerhard Berger's Ferrari found... 28 years after its theft

Metropolitan Police have recovered a Ferrari - stolen 28 years ago - belonging to former Formula 1 driver Gerhard Berger. This red Ferrari F512M, worth £350,000, was one of two Italian sports cars stolen while their drivers were at the San Marino Grand Prix at Imola, Italy, in April 1995. Authorities received a tip from the carmaker in January this year, after checks were carried out on a car purchased by an American buyer through a British broker last year, the Daily Mail reported.

The Vehicle Organized Crime Unit discovered the car had been shipped to Japan shortly after it was stolen, until it was returned to the UK in late 2023. They acted quickly to take possession of the vehicle and prevent it from being exported. Despite searches, the second car has not been found and no arrests have yet been made, authorities added.

Joint efforts by the police, the National Crime Agency and the car manufacturer resulted in the Ferrari being traced in just four days. PC Mike Pilbeam, who led the investigation, said: “The stolen Ferrari, worth close to £350,000, had been missing for more than 28 years before we managed to find it in just four days. Our investigations have been thorough and have included contacts with authorities around the world.”
