Football: record profits for the Brighton club in 2023

The Brighton club announced on Tuesday an after-tax profit of 122.8 million pounds (around 143.4 million EUR) for the 2022-2023 season, its best sportingly and financially speaking, which constitutes a record in the Premier League, according to the press.

The team from the south of England, promoted to the English elite in 2017, had its most successful season by finishing in sixth place in the championship, which allowed it to access a European competition (Europa League) for the first time in its history. The “Seagulls”, coached by the Italian Roberto de Zerbi, also reached the semi-final of the FA Cup last year, further boosting their income.

Thanks to these sporting performances, “the turnover for the period was the highest ever achieved by the club; up 17.2% to £204.5 million, compared to £174.5 million in 2021/22,” Brighton said in a statement.

In total, “profit after tax jumped from 24.1 million pounds in the previous financial year to 122.8 million pounds,” Brighton said in a press release. This is a record profit in the Premier League, said Kieran Maguire, specialist in financial matters in football, a statement echoed by several British media.

Brighton's finances benefited from the transfers of Alexis Mac Allister to Liverpool, Yves Bissouma to Tottenham and Marc Cucurella to Chelsea, as well as the compensation paid by the same club to recruit Graham Potter, the predecessor of Roberto de Zerbi .

On the other hand, the transfer compensation concerning Moises Caicedo and Robert Sanchez, who also left for Chelsea last summer, are not included in the 2022-2023 financial year because these transfers took place after its closure, the club said.
