A few days after the defeat suffered in the derby against Lorient in Ligue 1 (2-1), Rennes rectified the situation by winning this Thursday evening in Greece against Panathinaikos (1-2) for the 3rd day of the Europa League.
Bruno Genesio's men had a great match this Thursday evening in Athens. The Bretons were put on the right track from the 7th minute through Amine Gouiri, who opened the scoring with a great collective action and dampened the Greek enthusiasm from the start of the match.
The Rennais, well superior to Panathinaikos in the first period, doubled the lead from the start of the second period. On a free kick very well taken by the Swiss Fabian Rieder, Arnaud Kalimuendo deflects the ball with a magnificent madjer and puts his team away. The Greeks, who were struggling to revolt, were helped by the referee of the match. In the 61st minute of play, the latter sanctioned slight contact from Lorenz Assignon on the Argentinian Palacios in his penalty area. The penalty was transformed by Fótis Ioannidis who brought the Athenian team within a goal of the Bretons.
Bruno Génésio's men, helped by an excellent Mandanda, managed the last half hour perfectly and could even have increased the score without the great saves from Panathinaikos goalkeeper Alberto Brignoli. With this success, the Bretons take first place in their group before hosting Strasbourg in Ligue 1 on Sunday.
