Cycling: Vingegaard boss calls for faster implementation of security measures

“I'm tired of it taking so long because we've been talking about it for four years already. I call on the UCI to move forward. I know that David Lappartient (president of the International Cycling Union) is in favor of it. Let’s go,” declared the Dutchman, Richard Plugge, who lost his two stars, Wout Van Aert and Jonas Vingegaard, in quick succession after serious falls.

“The problems will not be resolved in a week. So we might as well start right away, he added. We have a ready-made solution with SafeR (a body set up by the UCI). But everyone slows down, whether for reasons of ego or politics. We have already had enough warning signs.”

He recommends firstly “looking at the way the races are organized”. “The teams have become enormously professional but some organizers are lagging behind. Let's give them the means to develop too, just like the race commissioners. ASO (which notably organizes the Tour de France and Paris-Roubaix) and Flanders Classics do a very good job but others less so,” he insisted.

“I applaud ASO’s initiative to change the approach to the Arenberg Gap. It's courageous. Good or bad solution, it doesn't matter. At least things are moving,” he said again on the eve of Paris-Roubaix where the organizers installed a chicane at the entrance to the famous cobbled sector.
