Cycling: Mark Cavendish wins the 4th stage of the Tour of Colombia

British veteran Mark Cavendish sprinted to win the fourth stage of the Tour of Colombia on Friday in Zipaquirá, dominating Colombian sprinter Fernando Gaviria.

At 38 years old, the “Cav” managed to get the better of his opponents, well led by his teammates from the Astana team, while Gaviria (Movistar) had dominated him during the first stage.

Cavendish came to Colombia to prepare for his 2024 season, the highlight of which will be the Tour de France, where he will aim for a 35th stage victory to become the only record holder for bouquets won on the Grande Boucle. He currently shares this record with Belgian Eddy Merckx.

Cavendish had announced his retirement at the end of 2023 but, frustrated by his retirement during the 8th stage of the Tour de France, he finally decided to return for another season.

On the Tour of Colombia, an event contested above 2,000 m where the air becomes thinner, he should be in much more difficulty during the last two stages where the mountains will be on the menu.
