Belgian Greg Van Avermaet, Olympic champion in the road race in Rio in 2016 and winner of Paris-Roubaix in 2017, will retire at the age of 37 at the end of the season, he announced on Wednesday.
"My adventure with professional cycling ends after this season," he wrote on Instagram. Even though my decision was difficult to make, when I look back, I am extremely proud of what I have accomplished”.
At the end of this season, Van Avermaet will be at the end of his contract with the French formation AG2R-Citrôen for whom he has been driving since 2021 but with whom he has never signed a success. In addition to Olympic gold and the Hell of the North, the Flandrien's record includes two stages of the Tour de France and a stage of the Vuelta. Winner in 2017 of Paris-Roubaix, the Nieuwsblad, the E3 GP and Ghent-Wevelgem, he had occupied the head of the UCI world ranking that year.
