Coupe de France: Sochaux brings down Lorient

This historic club is smiling again after a summer shaken by turbulence which almost caused its descent into the depths of French football. Pushed to the brink of filing for bankruptcy by its Chinese owner, FC Sochaux-Montbéliard was saved by its historic former president Jean-Claude Plessis, who brought together a group of local investors alongside Pierre Wantiez.

In its Auguste-Bonal stadium, Sochaux defeated Lorient, 19th in Ligue 1, who have not won a single match since a victory against Rennes on October 22. On a penalty obtained at the end of added time, Ivorian Issouf Macalou allowed the club, winners of the Coupe de France in 1937 and 2007, to qualify for the next round. This result also allows the Franc-Comtois, fifth in the National championship (3rd division) to achieve a fourth consecutive victory.
