The life of the supporter in question is not in danger, police told AFP on Tuesday.
“Agents from the Porta Ticinese police station intervened after the attack on a British man who was accompanied by a friend,” explained a police source.
“The 58-year-old man was approached by a group of people wearing hoodies. They injured his arm and his back. He was transported to Milan hospital, which he will be able to leave shortly,” added this source.
An investigation has been opened to determine whether it is “an attack linked to a conflict between supporters or a criminal act,” this source concluded.
Earlier, a Newcastle spokesperson expressed “concern following reports of the violent attack on a supporter in Milan”. “We contacted the local authorities to understand the circumstances of this attack,” he added.
AC Milan hosts Newcastle on Tuesday at 4:45 p.m., as part of the first day of the group stage of the Champions League.
