It was the (very) bad surprise of the first day of the U18 European Basketball Championship on Saturday in Nis, Serbia: the floor of the Mika Antic gymnasium, too slippery, caused repeated falls. Several players of the Türkiye / Poland match ended up in the infirmary.
To protest, the players had decided to pass the ball in the last 5 minutes of the game. The next match, between France and Sweden (86-48), was held without any precautionary measures being taken. Fortunately, no player was injured.
The absence of air conditioning as well as the heavy rains on Nis created a phenomenon of condensation, transforming the parquet floor into a skating rink. On Monday, FIBA reacted to the incidents on Saturday, in a statement emailed to ESPN: "The match between Poland and Turkey should have been stopped by the match officials due to the unfavorable conditions inside this gymnasium. Our Competitions department will investigate this matter to understand why this was not done. Local organizers have cleaned all areas thoroughly and all necessary measures have been taken to avoid any problems in the future.”
