Car market, growth in prices of new cars

The year that has just ended has recorded a down trend for the sector automotive, that has been the subject of a careful analysis of the Osservatorio Autopromotec.

In a nutshell, according to the study is derived from a processing of Istat indexes of consumer prices, in 2019 the price lists of new cars in Italy increased by an average of 2.5% compared to the previous year.

According to analysts, is an increase not indifferent since it is greater than the increase recorded for the rate of inflation (+0.6 percent). At the same time there has been a decrease in the prices of used cars, which in 2019 have suffered a decrease in the price of 2,7%, while results in slight increase (+1.5%) in the prices of the services for the assistance to the car.

The study highlights how the increase in the prices of new cars is a phenomenon that occurs now constantly for some time: in 2017 the indicator of the prices of new cars reported an average increase on the previous year of 0.9%.

New surge in 2018 (+1.9% on the year 2017) as well as in 2019 (+2,5% 2018) and according to the Osservatorio Autopromotec, the exponential increase in the prices of new cars in these years is justified by the tendency of the car manufacturers in providing technology, content and software more and more sophisticated on-board of the car.

In contrast, the used market has highlighted in recent years, a series of drops (2.6% in 2017, 3.3% in 2018, down 2.7% in 2019), which are caused in particular by the now infamous “demonization” of diesel engines.

A phenomenon that has triggered a slowdown on the part of drivers in the decision to replace the old diesel car, ending up inevitably lead to a devaluation of the used cars feeded with diesel oil.

Finally, on the front of the sector of assistance services to the car, the prices in 2019 showed a trend increase moderate (+1,5%), in line with increases of previous years.

note that only the entry for the maintenance and repair has registered a growth slightly more significant (+1,6%), whereas it was more moderate that in the prices of lubricants (+0.9%) and parts and accessories (+0,4%), with unchanged tires. (m.r.)
