To SAIL with the graphene. The two researchers Gabriele Nanni and Ilker Bayer, team Smart materials of Iit led by Athanassia Athanassiou, have developed in cooperation with the company Quantum Sails Italia a technology that has allowed us to create a sail that is more durable and up to 25% more light compared to a modern wing of equal size. The patent-Iit has been licensed to Quantum Sails Italy who are currently using this technology in the championship of 52 Super Series, the main circuit in the world for boats monohull.
Iit: here are the first sailing with graphene
After about a year and a half of cooperation with the company Quantum Sails Italy, the research team Iit has patented a technology to make sails for high performance. The technique introduced by researchers at Iit enables, in preparation of sailing, to eliminate the presence of empty spaces, which represent a critical element for the separation of the layers, by increasing the resistance in the time of sailing.

The material used to produce the canopy is a mixture of a polymer and graphene. The mixture solidifies at room temperature, with a big advantage from the point of view of economic and environmental. Once solidified, this forms a thin layer and flexible but at the same time strong, the basic features for a high performance glider that is easily foldable.

The first prototypes of the sail are already in use in the championship of 52 Super Series where the team Quantum Racing is achieving excellent results. Some prototypes of sails produced with this new process will be exhibited at the Genoa international boat show (from 19 to 24 September), and used in the next races of the championship of 52 Super Series in Puerto Portals in Spain and in Porto Cervo. © Reproduction reserved
