There has been many a pundit that has noted how inadequate Paul Pogba has been since his re-arrival at Old Trafford. Hot and cold is the best way to describe him. Even the die-hard United fans know that he hasn’t been what they wanted and yet has obviously got the talent. The following opinion piece looks at why Paul Pogba showed his true colors against Spurs.
However, for anyone who saw him play in Manchester United’s last game against Spurs, the man is golden - if only he were playing against Mourinho every week.
Paul Pogba is a man who thrives on challenge and has an open disdain for anyone who hasn’t realized his brilliance on the pitch. Jose Mourinho has perhaps been too busy advertising online casino slots to have noticed that oftentimes his psychobabble backfires.
Pogba had a point to prove
After giving him leadership and then publicly stripping him of the self-same leadership role when he was at Manchester United, Mourinho’s handling of Paul Pogba arguably led to the ‘Special One’ exiting Old Trafford. He could no longer coax him to play, and once their relationship was trashed by the public humiliation and public jibes made at press conferences, it became an open secret that the World Cup winner and the ‘Special one’ had an issue. Mourinho lost the dressing room, and Pogba became another coach’s problem. Or so Jose said.
There has been a lot said about Pogba since and yet there remained bad blood between the coach who could have taken the payer to the next level, and the man who won the World cup with France. However, the game Pogba played against Spurs has proven that he is indeed a player to be reckoned with and one who can boss the game in the Premier League.
Paul’s match stats in the last game against Tottenham showed that he ran more than anyone else, tackled more, and drove United forward on every opportunity he had with the ball at his feet. He really is the midfield maestro that fans have seen glimpses of throughout the time he has been at Old Trafford. Furthermore, it would seem, and speculation is rife, that what brought Paul to the fore in this game was the fact that he needed to show Mourinho the real Paul Pogba and put to bed the talk about how it was Pogba that lost Mourinho when United most needed him.
Pogba has, however, showed that he probably needs some mental coaching or constant challenge to play as he did against Spurs on a weekly basis. His celebration of the win and the drive he had the entire match was directed more towards Jose than it was for Ole and United.
Ole needs to have noted this, and has to figure out how to get the best from Paul Pogba if United are to do better than 2nd next season. As is often the case with brilliant players, they need a little coaxing to get the best out of them, the secret is to simply know how.
