Appalachian State East Carolina game displays mayo

The Duke's Mayo Classic between Appalachian State and East Carolina on Thursday night naturally featured a "mayo-eating contest" between students at the Bank of America Stadium in Charlotte.

On the jumbotron, students were eating fries and mayo. One student looked as though he was getting sick of mayo at one point. The game was still being played and prompted many confused responses via social media.

The contest was held in the first half.

At the half, the Pirates were 20-6 ahead of the Mountaineers. Chase Brice passed to Thomas Hennigan a touchdown and Camerun People ran in for a touchdown. Holton Ahlers passed to Keaton Mitchell for a touchdown.

This was the first meeting between the two teams since 1979. East Carolina won the game 38-21.

Appalachian State was 9-3 last year and won the Myrtle Beach Bowl. In four of its six previous seasons, the team has won 10 or more games. They hope to win another in 2021.
