Has been stored for 50 years: NASA is ready to explore the untouched måneprøver

almost 400 kilos of moon rocks, core samples, and sand has remained untouched and stored in 50 years. Now, for the first time be taken forward in the light and examined.

It writes the New York Times, according to Science.dk.

Some samples have been frozen, while the other has been stored in helium.

Måneprøverne was collected, when the Apollo spaceship was on expeditions on the Moon several times between 1969 and 1972. Here collected many kilos of moon rocks, and the vast majority of them were examined at the time.

NASA decided, however, that there should be stored some samples, so they could be examined in the future, when the technology had evolved and had been refined. And so it is now.

'The technology we had available in the 1960s and 1970s, was not able to do the same, as we can today,' said Jessica Barnes, the New York Times, according to Science.dk.

She is an astronomer and will lead the team at the University of Arizona's Lunar and Planetary Laboratory, which will examine the old måneprøver.

In total, nine teams from different universities, to contribute to the studies.

She points out that detaljegraden in today's technology is crucial for people to now choose to open the lid to the old moonstone:

'today we can investigate a mineral in such a way that we can get down to the last detail, as far down as the width of a human strand of hair.'

the Surveys are scheduled to take place later in 2019.
