After warning about salmonellaudbrud: It is only the tip of the iceberg

the Number of infected by the dreaded salmonella bacterium has increased since the Statens Serum Institute earlier in december warned of an outbreak in Denmark.

New figures from the institute show that 33 people Tuesday are infected with salmonella. A major investigation to find the cause behind the salmonella outbreak has been launched, but so far there has not been a breakthrough yet.

The only thing there right now is real, is that there is talk about the type monophasic Typhimurium, which are often found in pork, it sounds from the Statens Serum Institut.

How to avoid becoming infected.

There are a few, but good advice that you should follow if you want to avoid being infected with salmonella:

1) Remember to wash your hands after you have touched raw meat. This way, you avoid spreading bacteria to the finished food e.g. roast meat, salad, and bread.

2) It is important to keep the raw meat separated from the meat, which is fried. This way, you avoid spreading bacteria from the raw meat to the fried meat.

3) Minced meat, poultry, and mechanical mørnet meat should be gennemvarmt. In these types of meat can bacteria also sit inside in the product.

4) Change or wash the cutting board and knife immediately after it has been used for raw meat. So, you avoid spreading bacteria from the raw meat via the cutting board to the food that is finished and ready to eat e.g. salad or bread.

5) Throw the used packaging from raw meat straight in the bin. It is important that the finished food does not come in contact with juices from raw meat, especially juices from the poultry. Throw out the packaging, and do not put it færdigstegte meat back in the packaging

6) If you are grilling in the garden, so follow grillrådene: Two dishes and Two grilltænger - and then wash hands. You should be especially careful when you prepare poultry, and grilling outdoors in the summer. It goes often wrong with the hygiene at the garden grill.

5. december could Statens Serum Institute confirm that at least 28 children and adults from across the country had been sick. The talk increases now, and it can easily continue, inform the epidemiologist at the Statens Serum Institut Luise Müller.

Salmonellaudbruddet is in the Danish context, large, and Luise Müller has previously told to the news agency Ritzau that the number of sick is usually under ten persons by an eruption.

Now she explains to Newsbreak that you've only seen the tip of the iceberg with regard to the number of infected people.

– There is some delay on it. That goes, of course, a piece of time, you have taken the test, to the is us in the hands of Statens Serum Institut. So if there is someone who has been sick recently, we have not recorded them yet, says Luise Müller to Newsbreak.dk.

Epidemiologen tells, however, at the same time, that one should not paint the devil on the wall yet, though there is talk about a major outbreak.

– There is no reason neither to fear the holidays or not to eat pork. One must make sure to gennemstege and -cook his pork, and keep a good food, so you keep the raw pork from the ready-to-eat food, says Luise Müller.

She explains, finally, that the Statens Serum Institut is doing everything they can to find the cause for the infection.

– It is a large questionnaire study where we interview both patients and healthy controls. The results are expected to be ready in the course of the week, says Luise Müller.

Symptoms of a salmonellainfektion is among other things, diarrhea, vomiting, and general malaise.

Luise Müller explains that the body itself normally perform the disease. You just need to remember to take plenty of fluids, so as not to get dehydrated.

Salmonellainfektionen can occur if the meat is not fried properly, or if the juice from the pork comes in contact with other foods, which does not require heat treatment during preparation in the kitchen.
