30 years after the fall of the wall is a German football still shared

It is telling that the German world CUP squad this summer contained only a single player from east Germany – Toni Kroos.

Kroos was born in Greifswald in the state of Mecklenburg-western Pomerania, situated at the Baltic sea coast.

Not counting RB Leipzig, it is also telling that the Bundesliga is not included a single team from the former GDR since 2009, when Energie Cottbus went out.

Hungarian authorities down the electric fence that marked the border with Austria. A month later, it had 13 000 east German tourists escaped through Hungary to Austria.

It created a chain of events. The GDR forbade travel to Hungary. But it meant that the east germans instead saw Czechoslovakia as a way out of the eastern bloc. Through Czechoslovakia, they sought to either proceed to Hungary, or to the west German embassy in Prague.

Magdeburg, the only teams from the DDR who won a Europatitel, playing in the second division together with Dynamo Dresden, once a semifinalist in the Uefa cup, Union Berlin and Erzgebirge Aue (Wismut Karl-Marx-Stadt/SC Wismut Aue).

But the road upwards is steep.
