The skin of mammals carries out several important tasks: it provides a protective barrier waterproof against the outside world, which protects it from physical injury, radiation, and microorganisms, and at the same time produces hair and it houses the sweat glands. This complexity of the tissue requires many types of cells, like immune cells, nerve and pigment.
To study systematically the skin, researchers have mapped its cells, about 50 different types, describing exactly where you are and which genes they express. the Atlas was published online and made available to the scientific community because the authors believe that this information may be useful to other researchers who study the diseases of the skin or the mechanisms of healing from the wounds.
The authors, analyzing the data, they discovered that the outermost layer of the hair follicle is composed of different cell types organized in a specific way, and that the cells are coordinated during the stages of hair growth.
"This information will provide knowledge crucial to the flexibility of the skin and what it does to maintain its function and its structure in different situations", notes the first author is Simon Joost . "This knowledge, he adds, can help us to understand the flexibility of other organs, that is, as you renew and respond to their different needs".
