did you Know that a mosquito people can smell of as much as fifty feet away? That annoying little creature with some nifty antennas on the head that are stimulated by the acids that humans and other animals excrete. Take that zuurconcentratie, then you know the mosquito that its prey is approaching. the
But there may be science in the future, or even a stick for stitches. Scientists found that one gene, more particular the lr8a gene is responsible for the notice of the acid (sweat)odors. Once the gene was removed with CRISPR/cas9 – with a pair of scissors a piece of DNA is broken to cut – had, the mosquitoes are less interested in people. Half of the mosquitoes poked no more.
And that is good news, because mosquitoes carry dangerous diseases. Dengue (dengue fever), the zikavirus, yellow fever and malaria are but a few examples. Once mosquitoes, the diseases no longer spread, it would be a deadly outbreak also much less common.
exactly How that work would go? Now scientists know which gene they need to manipulate in mosquitoes to ensure that they do not actively seek human prey, they would be a few modified mosquitoes release in the wild. That would probably be cross with non-gm mosquitoes, allowing less and less mosquitoes the lr8a gene would possess.
