Voting rights from the age of 16 in New Zealand?

This ruling by the Supreme Court in New Zealand was eagerly awaited: The current voting rights from the age of 18 are discriminatory and violate the human rights of young people, the court ruled on Monday.

If politicians follow the verdict, the voting age in the Pacific country could soon be lowered to 16. A group of young activists called Make It 16 filed the case two years ago, arguing that younger people should have the right to vote on issues like climate policy, as they particularly affect their future.

After the group failed in a lower court and subsequent appeal, the Supreme Court has now upheld the lawsuit. However, the ruling does not automatically guarantee a change in the voting age – only parliament can decide on such a change in the law.

Make It 16 co-director Caeden Tipler called the ruling "historic". “The government and parliament cannot ignore such a clear legal and moral message. They have to let us vote," she explained. "If the government doesn't lower the voting age to 16 now, then they are deliberately violating our human rights."

New Zealand's Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern reacted immediately. On the same day, the social democrat announced that the government wanted to prepare a draft law that would then be discussed in parliament.

She herself was open to changing the voting age. "In our view, this is an issue that is best placed in Parliament for everyone to have their say," she said, according to Britain's Guardian on Monday.
