Uganda passes strict law against homosexuality

In Uganda, homosexuals are threatened with even more severe persecution than before. According to Ugandan media reports, the parliament in Kampala voted in favor of a new anti-LGBTQ law on Tuesday evening. According to a report in the Monitor newspaper on Wednesday, the possible death penalty was even included in the last-minute vote.

There was no confirmation of this at first. The original draft spoke of ten years in prison for same-sex relationships. The new law was justified on the grounds that Ugandans should be protected from "homosexual elements" and that the authorities should be able to act against "escalating moral decadence". It also criminalizes identification as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender or queer, as well as any form of support for LGBT people.

The new law now goes to President Yoweri Museveni, who has 60 days to sign it or refer it back to Parliament. The human rights organization Amnesty International called on Museveni to reject the law. It is a serious attack on human rights and despises the constitution. So far, however, the President himself has also been publicly quoted as inciting hate speech against sexual minorities.

In the East African country, lesbians, gays, bisexuals and transgender people are constantly discriminated against and persecuted. According to current legislation, which dates back to British colonial times, same-sex acts can already be punished with lengthy imprisonment. However, there have always been attempts, encouraged and supported by evangelical churches, to intensify criminalization. However, the Constitutional Court overturned a similar law from 2014 due to procedural failings.
