"The points system only works if there is an oversupply of people willing to immigrate," says the Union

In view of the trip to Canada by Minister of Labor Hubertus Heil and Minister of the Interior Nancy Faeser (both SPD), the Union questions whether the point system there should be applied to labor migration to Germany. "The points system only works if there is an oversupply of people willing to immigrate," said deputy CDU/CSU parliamentary group leader Hermann Gröhe to the "Rheinische Post". Germany, on the other hand, must become more attractive to migrant workers.

"We have to create a climate in Germany in which those who need us and those who need us feel welcome," said Gröhe. “Educational trips to Canada” do not contribute to this at first. The Skilled Immigration Act has already been modernized. But due to insufficient capacities, thousands of applications for visas and recognition of professional qualifications are currently piling up, said Gröhe.

From the point of view of the CDU labor market expert Ottilie Klein, the Canadian points system cannot be transferred to Germany. "The points system planned by the traffic light is not the right way, because it requires that Germany can choose freely from a wide pool of foreign specialists," Klein told the editorial network Germany (RND). But this is not the case.

Heil and Faeser want to find out more about Canadian immigration law because of the local shortage of skilled workers. Discussions are planned with the Canadian government officials responsible for labor market policy, immigration and security, as well as with the immigration authorities and companies.

Heil explained that he hoped the visit would give him a "look into the 'machine room' of the Canadian system - also to take good examples and suggestions back to Germany". Faeser emphasized that Canada is a "model" for modern immigration law.
