Son of RAF victim warns against radicalization of climate protection protests

The son of the Attorney General Siegfried Buback, who was killed by the terrorist organization Red Army Faction, Michael Buback, does not consider parallels between the RAF and the climate protectionists of the "last generation" to be absurd, and warns against a further radicalization of the activists.

"I understand that young people are very worried," he told the editorial network Germany. “But I warn against trying to achieve goals with radical measures and violence. That has only brought us bad luck.”

He would "reluctantly compare the activities of any group with the RAF because they were particularly cruel and bad," added the 77-year-old. "But I see ideologically based massive interference with the rights of others."

Buback's father Siegfried, then Federal Public Prosecutor of the Federal Republic of Germany, was shot in his company car in Karlsruhe on April 7, 1977 by members of the RAF, two of his companions also died. The "Ulrike Meinhof Commando" later confessed to the crime. Despite the subsequent conviction of several terrorists, it is still unclear who actually fired the shots.

Lawyer Butz Peters, author of several books on the history of the RAF, said with regard to the "Last Generation" and corresponding warnings from politicians: "RAF is very high in this context." Because they have deliberately killed people "in the idea that to be able to change the political system in the Federal Republic as a result - while those we are talking about are letting parts of the road traffic in our big cities collapse in the idea that this will enable them to achieve their climate goals".

However, Peters sees “a very clear parallel in the misjudgment of our political system”. After all, in representative democracy everyone can vote and be elected. "Anyone who thinks they can do without it and use violence to achieve their goals is leaving the consensus of the Democrats." Radicalization can therefore "not be ruled out".
