After almost ten years, Doris Schröder-Köpf (SPD), the Lower Saxony State Migration Commissioner, is stepping down from her post. This was announced by the state government in Hanover on Friday. The member of parliament and former wife of former Chancellor Gerhard Schröder (SPD) will give up her position at the beginning of the new legislative period in the federal state.
According to the Lower Saxony State Chancellery, the 59-year-old wants to remain in office until the question of succession has been clarified. The State Chancellery did not provide any information on the reasons for Schröder-Köpf's withdrawal.
Prime Minister Stephan Weil (SPD) explained that she had "completed her voluntary work with great commitment and a lot of passion". Schröder-Köpf herself said that over the past few years it had been "an honor and a great concern" for her to support people with immigrant and refugee backgrounds.
Schröder-Köpf has been a member of the Lower Saxony state parliament since 2013 and represents the Hanover-Döhren constituency. In the most recent state elections around four weeks ago, she defended them and won the direct mandate. The new legislative period in Lower Saxony begins next Tuesday. Then the newly elected state parliament meets for its constitutive session.
Schröder-Köpf took over the office of Lower Saxony State Commissioner for Migration and Participation in February 2013. In 1997 she married the then Prime Minister of Lower Saxony and later Chancellor Schröder. The marriage was divorced in 2018.
