Vladimir Putin is not only waging a war of aggression against Ukraine. He also wages a "holy war". The Russian president and his henchmen in the Kremlin keep using this term to give their aggression a religious meaning. The greed for conquest is whipped up in this way into a “holy war” against the West – in the hope of being able to intoxicate the majority of Russians with the fiery booze of this pathos.
Not surprising, but still reprehensible, is that the Russian Orthodox Church joins in this chorus. Even after Putin's mobilization, the head of the Russian Orthodox Church, Patriarch Kirill, called for: "Sacrificing oneself cleanses the soul from all the sins of life." Russia's church is a state church and has always been an obedient element of the respective Kremlin Men's.
It is therefore not a violation of freedom of belief that the Ukrainian government took the Kiev Pechersk Lavra from the Russian Orthodox Church and gave it to the Ukrainian Orthodox Church. As early as 2016, she welcomed Putin's memorable statement that "Russia's borders do not end anywhere" and made herself the loudspeaker of the president's crude historical statements in churches and monasteries. The Russian Orthodox Church is the willing helper of Putin's consent dictatorship. Alongside the army and state propaganda, it is nothing more than another weapon in Putin's armoury. It cannot, therefore, invoke freedom of religion.
