Putin and Xi want to usher in a “new era” of relations in Moscow

According to the Kremlin, China's President Xi Jinping and Russian President Vladimir Putin want to usher in a "new era" in bilateral relations during Xi's visit to Moscow next week. According to reports by Russian news agencies, Kremlin adviser Yuri Ushakov announced on Friday that the signing of a joint declaration "on deepening the comprehensive partnership and the beginning of a new era for strategic relations" is planned.

The Kremlin expressly welcomed Beijing's cautious position in the Ukraine conflict. "Of course, the Ukraine conflict will be part of the talks," Ushakov said. "We very much welcome the Chinese leadership's position of restraint and balance on this issue."

Beijing understands “the real causes of this crisis” and Moscow is positive about the Chinese peace initiative from the end of February to settle the conflict. The two presidents also want to talk about cooperation in the "military-technical" area.

Accordingly, the signing of a document on Russian-Chinese economic relations is also planned, as well as around a dozen other agreements that are still being worked out. The two presidents would also publish an article that would be published in a major Russian and Chinese newspaper "as an important signal" before the talks.

The two heads of state are said to have a first meeting before dinner on Monday. Xi's visit to Moscow is scheduled to last until Wednesday. The Chinese President's visit comes at a time when Moscow is increasingly turning to Beijing because of Western sanctions resulting from the Ukraine conflict.

Numerous observers assume that Russia could become dependent on Beijing as a result. Ushakov contradicted this: “There is neither a leader nor a follower in relations between Russia and China. Both sides trust each other as equals.”
