Paris: Quai Valéry Giscard d'Estaing will be inaugurated on May 9

The inauguration of Quai Valéry Giscard d'Estaing will take place on Tuesday 9 May. The town hall of Paris and the family of the former President of the Republic (1974-1981), who died in 2020, chose this symbolic date corresponding to that of Europe Day to celebrate the event.

The PS mayor of Paris Anne Hidalgo, the LR mayor of the 7th arrondissement of the capital Rachida Dati, as well as the widow of the former head of state Anne-Aymone Giscard d'Estaing, and her son Louis Giscard d'Estaing , will be present in particular - the final format of the political guests is not yet completely closed.

The portion of Quai Anatole France that will bear the name of the former president is located between rue du Bac and rue de Solferino, where the headquarters of the Socialist Party was located for many years.

The decision had been ratified by a vote in the Municipal Council on March 14, unanimously acquired by the political groups, and in the presence of Louis Giscard d'Estaing.

For the latter, today UDI mayor of Chamalières (Puy-de-Dôme), number two of the centrist party and president of the Valéry Giscard d'Estaing Foundation, this new registration is not only a way of paying tribute to the memory of a "great president of the Fifth Republic", but also an opportunity to recall that he was a political actor in the capital since it was thanks to the law of 1975 that the first city in France was able to offer Parisians the right to elect their mayor by universal suffrage, from 1977. This also allowed Jacques Chirac to be the first to win the mandate of city councilor.

For Louis Giscard d'Estaing, the place will house another political symbol since near the chosen quay, beyond the presence of the Palais de Légion d'Honneur and the famous Musée d'Orsay, there is also the building of the deposit fund. “It is an image of the stability of public finances to which my father was very attached,” underlines the elected official.
