A growing number of Republican senators say that they oppose holding an impeachment trial for former President Trump.
Sen. Marco Rubio, R-Fla., told"Fox News Sunday" that the forthcoming trial of Trump is"dumb" and harmful for the U.S., even when he was accountable"for some of what occurred" at the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6.
"Well, to start with, I think that the trial is stupid. It is counterproductive," Rubio said Sunday. "We have a flaming fire in this country, and it's like shooting a bunch of gas and pouring it in addition to the flame."
They hope that strong Republican denunciations of Trump following the Jan. 6 riot will translate into a conviction and a separate vote to bar him from holding office .
Republican senators -- who will serve as jurors in the trial -- are rallying to Trump's legal defense, as they did during his first impeachment trial last year.
Arguments from the Senate trial will start the week of Feb. 8.
