Lawmakers react to Chauvin verdict with relief, calls for policing reform

They revived calls for passing of this George Floyd Justice in Policing Act.

The Congressional Black Caucus, assembled to see the verdicts handed down, then came into the cameras, together with Chair Rep. Joyce Beatty, D-Ohio, telling colleagues that although the band"clearly" agrees with all the guilty verdicts, this really is"a first step"

"We will struggle for all those who perished or have been hurt senselessly by law enforcement," Beatty said. "We are aware there are still the moms, the households, the kids that are shedding tears now, since the verdict won't bring back their loved ones."

Rep. Cori Bush, a Missouri Democrat, lamented these scenarios had become so commonplace, stating quitting them is her target for a lawmaker.

"This was responsibility, but it is not yet justice," Bush explained.

Rep. Karen Bass, D-Calif., stated that it's crucial that Congress pass on the George Floyd Justice in Policing Act, stating that because his passing, many other Americans have died at the hands of law enforcement.

"So today we must concentrate on transforming policing in the USA because George Floyd's murder of a year past -- over 100 individuals have died at the hands of authorities," Bass explained. In my view, this can be (a) human rights issue at the USA of America"

Soon after that the Floyd verdict was passed down, Sen. Dick Durbin, D-Ill., who chairs the Senate Judiciary Committee, announced that the committee could hold a hearing addressing police reform.

Appearing together with the Congressional Black Caucus members, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi attracted some online criticism for stating Floyd had forfeited his life.

"So again, thank you George Floyd for sacrificing your life for justice, for being there to call out for your mother, how dreadful was to call out for your mother," she explained. "I can not handle it, but because you, also due to tens of thousands of individuals around the globe. It came out for justice,'' Your title will remain synonymous with justice."

"I believe our justice system is becoming more precisely, I am grateful for the verdict and clearly believed it was murder and that , my very first idea or soon afterward and feel this reinforces the reality that while we may want to cultivate our confidence in areas of the system," Scott stated. "The fact of the matter is this reinforces a commitment we can have assurance that the justice system is getting more just."

Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer praised the conclusion in a tweet, and called for police reform.

"but a guilty verdict does not signify the persistent problem of police misconduct is solved," Schumer said. "We will keep working for purposeful change."
