Kaili's detention extended by two months

Former Vice-President Eva Kaili remains in prison in the bribery scandal in the European Parliament. The pre-trial detention of the Greek had been extended by two months, the public prosecutor's office in Brussels announced on Friday. The detention of Belgian MEP Marc Tarabella has been extended by one month.

The bribery scandal, which became public at the end of 2022, is about alleged influence on decisions of the EU Parliament by the governments of Qatar and Morocco. The public prosecutor's office has accused the accused of corruption, money laundering and membership in a criminal organization.

The alleged mastermind Antonio Panzeri is also in custody. In January he signed an agreement with the public prosecutor's office in which he promised to make a comprehensive contribution to clarifying the scandal.

Kaili's partner Francesco Giorgi was allowed to leave prison under certain conditions at the end of February. The Italian has to continue his detention under house arrest with an electronic ankle bracelet. Because of possible involvement in the scandal, the European Parliamentarian Andrea Cozzolino is also under house arrest after a court decision in Naples.
