Donald Rumsfeld dies at 88: Politicians react to the passing of former defense secretary

Donald Rumsfeld's death on Wednesday at the age of 88 sparked a flurry of reactions from politicians as well as other public figures, who commented on the tragic life of the former secretary.

Rumsfeld's family reported his death, noting that he was "surrounded by his loved Taos, New Mexico family". Rumsfeld, a two-time defense secretary is most well-known for his leadership of the Pentagon policy during the wars on Iraq and Afghanistan.

Bush was one of the first to respond to Rumsfeld's passing, praising his former colleague as "steady service" as a wartime secretary for defense, a job he performed with strength, skill and honor.

Condoleezza Rice was secretary of state under the Bush administration and recalled Rumsfeld being a "remarkable, committed public servant".

He was a friend, a constant presence and a great friend during the many challenges of the post-9/11 world. He will be missed as a colleague as well as as a friend. Joyce and her family are in my thoughts, and prayers," she stated.

Rumsfeld is the only American to have served twice as the Pentagon's highest ranking official. Rumsfeld was a part of four presidential administrations, and once tried unsuccessfully for the presidency.

Rumsfeld was the defense secretary under President Bush and faced intense scrutiny regarding his handling of the Afghanistan and Iraq conflicts after the terrorist attacks on Sept. 11.

"I am deeply saddened by the passing of Donald Rumsfeld." John Bolton, another Bush administration official who was close to Rumsfeld, said that he had dedicated his life to public service. It was an honor to work alongside him in the Bush 43 Administration.

Senator Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) also offered condolences.

McConnell stated that Elaine and he were deeply saddened by the loss of an American patriot who had served his country with honor and dedication. "Donald Rumsfeld's many decades of service began among the brave men, women and children who worked to protect America.

"His active service in the Navy started a distinguished career that raised his talents to the highest ranks of policymaking and leadership. McConnell said that Donald Rumsfeld was a leader with conviction and a sharp intellect at every stage.

Rep. Mike Waltz (Republican from Florida), who was a Pentagon aide for Rumsfeld, stated that the country will "never forget its Secretary Of Defense who ran to the Pentagon on September 11th in order to help others in crisis."

"Donald Rumsfeld, a patriot, served his country in uniform in the halls and as U.S. Secretary of Defense under two administrations." Waltz stated that he was an Ambassador to NATO, White House Chief Staff and Secretary of Defense under two administrations. I take great pride in being a policy advisor for Afghanistan at the Pentagon under his direction. He was committed to making sure our military was available in times of peace, and keeping our country safe during wartime. Rest in peace.

Rumsfeld's family acknowledged his public service throughout his life in a statement.

Rumsfeld's family stated that history will be remembered for his extraordinary achievements over six decades in public service. However, for those who were closest to him and whose lives were forever altered by his actions, they will recall his love for Joyce, his family, and friends and the integrity he brought into a life of service to the country.
