Doctors and consumer advocates are calling for permanent sick leave over the phone

The German Association of General Practitioners is calling for the option of calling sick leave for employees, which was introduced during the corona pandemic, to be retained. "Anyone who pulls the plug on sick leave by phone now endangers the supply," said the deputy head of the German Association of General Practitioners, Nicola Buhlinger-Göpfarth, to the Friday editions of the newspapers of the editorial network Germany (RND). "To put it bluntly: it's no longer possible without the telephone sick note". The Federal Association of Consumers (vzbv) also called for retention.

According to Göpfarth, Vice President of the Association of General Practitioners, it should not only be possible to take sick leave over the phone in the future, not only in the case of mild respiratory diseases, but also in the case of mild gastrointestinal infections. “We general practitioners know our patients and are best able to judge when it makes sense to write off sick by phone and when it doesn’t,” said Göpfarth.

According to current plans, the option to take sick leave by telephone, which was introduced in spring 2020 at the beginning of the corona pandemic and has been extended several times, should still be possible for up to seven days until Friday and then expire.

The health expert of the vzbv, Thomas Moormann, asked the federal government to legally regulate the maintenance of telephone sick leave. Moormann said that politicians and experts agreed that they had to learn from the corona pandemic and preserve the tried and tested. Unfortunately, this is not the case with the telephone sick note, which has been practiced “very successfully” – although this represents a “great relief” for doctors and patients.
