Climate activists stick in front of the stage at the Merz speech – the police are investigating

Climate activists of the “last generation” stuck themselves in front of the stage in Mainz during a speech by CDU chairman Friedrich Merz. Two of them have already been identified, the police said on Friday. It is about two women aged 39 and 49 years. They are being investigated for trespassing, property damage and the abuse of emergency calls.

The disturbance occurred on Thursday afternoon at the New Year's reception of the CDU Mainz, where Merz gave a speech. He was invited to support the head of the economics department, Manuela Matz, who is running for the CDU in the mayoral election on February 12. According to the police, two activists disrupted the event around 3:30 p.m. and stuck themselves to the floor in front of the lectern.

Before the police arrived, both of them were detached from the floor with olive oil and led out of the hall by participants in the event. The women are said to have triggered a fire alarm at the venue before they fled undetected.

The activists of the "last generation" explained that the handling of Merz and the CDU with the climate catastrophe was "exemplary for the German political failure". "While he downplays or keeps silent about the life-threatening consequences of global warming, he takes every opportunity to warn of possible limitations imposed by climate policy measures," they accused him. He comforted the population “with the distant hope of saving technologies”.

Merz himself said to the activists during the disruption: "It's nice that you're still here - your colleagues are currently in Bali." Merz was referring to a "Bild" report, according to which two activists of the " Last Generation" had not appeared for a court hearing in Stuttgart because they had traveled to Bali. According to the "Last Generation", both flew to Thailand for several months.
