In Berlin, the exploratory talks that started on Friday will continue at regular intervals from the beginning of the week. After the meeting of the CDU and SPD on Monday, the SPD wants to exchange ideas with the Greens and the Left the very next day, as a spokesman for the party said on Sunday when asked.
Green spokesman Sebastian Brux confirmed to the German Press Agency: "We received an invitation for Tuesday and agreed." Left Chairwoman Katina Schubert also said that the SPD invitation had arrived and was accepted. The "Tagesspiegel" had previously reported on it.
Berlin's governing mayor and SPD state chairwoman Franziska Giffey announced immediately after the repeat election on February 12 that she also wanted to hold exploratory talks with the previous coalition partners of the red-green-red government coalition. First of all, however, the CDU invited the SPD and the Greens to hold initial consultations last Friday. The second meeting between the CDU and the Greens is scheduled for Wednesday.
The Berlin left had already made it clear during the election campaign that they wanted to continue the red-green-red coalition. The Greens' election goal was the continuation of the coalition under Green leadership. However, the winner of the election was the CDU with 28.2 percent. Mathematically, there is still a majority for a coalition of SPD, Greens and Left. The SPD and the Greens each received 18.4 percent, with the Social Democrats having a razor-thin lead. The left reached 12.2 percent. With a total of 49 percent, the three parties could also govern in Berlin in the future.
