After a knife attack – a police officer shoots at young people in Berlin Central Station

During an operation in Berlin's main train station on Saturday afternoon, a federal police officer fired a shot from his service weapon. According to a spokesman for the federal police, the incident happened around 2 p.m. as a result of an attempted knife attack by a suspected shoplifter.

The teenager was initially held by a store detective after the alleged theft in a Rossmann branch in the main train station. The man found several knives on the teenager. After the federal police officers arrived, the young woman pulled out another knife that had previously gone unnoticed. She tried to attack the emergency services with it, according to police sources.

The officials then used tear gas, it said. In order to thwart the attempted attack, one of the officers also fired a shot from his service weapon, a spokesman for the federal police confirmed. According to the information, the teenager was slightly hit in the arm. The fire department took her to a hospital. The injuries were not serious.

The spokesman for the federal police did not want to provide any further information on the arrested youth, citing the ongoing investigation. According to information from WELT from police circles, the security authorities had previously noticed her through violent actions.

In view of the impairments caused by the irritant gas, federal police officers and an employee of the Rossmann branch were also taken to a hospital as a precaution after the operation.

The attempted knife attack and the shooting happened in an adjoining room of the Rossmann branch, it said. "There was never any danger for visitors to the station," said a spokesman for the federal police WELT.

The federal police temporarily cordoned off the area around the drugstore. Train traffic did not have to be restricted. According to a spokesman for the authority, the fire brigade was deployed with up to 47 people as a result of the alarm.

The deployment of the federal police and fire brigade was over after a few hours. As is usual in such cases, the further investigations are not carried out by the Federal Police, but by the State Criminal Police Office of the Berlin police.

Berlin Central Station was opened in 2006. On average, it is used by more than 300,000 people every day, making it one of the busiest train stations in Germany.
