UN report: One in four deaths are caused by environmental problems

Millions of premature deaths every year caused by smog brought my last dozing, contaminated water and destroyed ecosystems. It is stated in a new report from the united nations, presented in conjunction with the united nations environment program (Unep summit in Nairobi.

It has taken six years and 250 researchers from 70 countries to compile the report, which, among other things, that ”the urgent action is without precedent is needed to halt and reverse the trend”.

how is over-consumption, pollution and food waste leads to hunger and diseases – and it is the rich countries that are the baddies in the drama. A third of all the food produced in the world is thrown away, of which the richest countries account for 56 per cent of wastage. In total there are food wastage for nine percent of all the world's emissions.

It may be a bleak reality that's painted up in the report, but the researchers believe that the challenges possible to overcome.

"If we reduce our waste and even eating less meat we can reduce the problem," says Joyeeta Gupta, principal of the report, to the AFP.
