So is the first album with bassist Dan Berglund, and drummer Magnus Öström and pianist Bugge Wesseltoft here. There was excitement in the air already at the Stockholm jazz festival in the autumn, when the trio made the audience debut and what it meant. Three outstanding, scandinavian jazz musicians, each with highly developed identity and successful, own band. And of course, the memory of the Berglunds and Öströms world-famous trio with pianist Esbjörn Svensson; an inevitable reminder of the grief after Svensson, in the middle of everything.
a new chapter. The three have their own sound, based on their collective temperament and how each individual musician is reflected in the next – and the next. Wesseltoft is a multi-faceted but also the nordic pianist, with a certain tone in common with the other. But if Esbjörn Svensson was the most melodiske in the mail.p.t. so it is rather Öström and perhaps in particular – but it is not given – Berglund, who takes the role here.
More overall sounds ”Reflections & the odyssey” suggestive dark, often with a minimalist cast and clips. Wesseltofts games on the vintage electric piano is a treat through and through – and it applies to all form of electronics he uses, here as in the previous context. In the Space at once introspective and vivid sound is again that time of contradiction between tradition and renewal.
