Ten julklappsböcker with Stockholm in focus

Frank Review

Normally I only give tips on the books in Swedish in the boktraven, but no rule without exceptions. It is after all christmas soon.

this book about Stockholm's metro stations have English text, but now it is in truth not very much text. Here are the pictures as it is important and it is a naked depiction in many ways. This is not a man as far as the eye can reach. It is, instead, the colors and the concrete that will speak.

The book told about a letter that the artist Vera Nilsson wrote to the then finansborgarrådet Hjalmar Mehr (P), in which she called for more jokes, joy, and color of the subway because it is an ”every-day-transport for a lot of non-motorised”.

And color abound at the 140 pages, even if the green ”spreads” which symbolizes the green line is at the top of the team.

historiska Media

the most obvious place in the jultraven have samfundet S:t Erik's yearbook, which came out just in time for christmas. Just as before, it is a special theme and this year's theme is – as the title reveals – city.

Many put an equal sign between the city and the Sergels torg square, and this place is in focus in two of the chapters; on the other, it is called ”Sergels Torg – between dream and reality” and, secondly, it called ”An exclamation point for the city” and is about Edvin Öhrströms glasobelisk, which was inaugurated in the same year as the house of culture, 1974.

In the former chapter, the readers know how it happened when the Plate got its triangular patterns. Architect Jorgen Kjaergaard wanted to use marble and slate, but it became too expensive, so it became a concrete with naturkross instead.

as famous as the plate is glasobelisken which can now switch between the 36 different colors.

”For christmas, I sometimes walk in the snow and sometimes go in gråslask, but in the winter, the cemetery is most beautiful”.

the Words were written by Caroline Krook, bishop emerita in Stockholm. She has contributed many thought-provoking words in this anthology which takes up most of the time between biological diversity and kolumbarier to begravningsseder and gravstenstvätt.

of Course, devoted to the world heritage the woodland cemetery space in the book, and Caroline Krook writes in the book about the secrecy which prevailed when the actress Greta Garbo in 1999 would be buried at the woodland cemetery, nine years after his death.

the Book contains large portions kyrkogårdshistoria, but also a lot of the present and – above all – the future. Not least in the chapters that deal dreams of a new cemetery in Järvafältet and ”begravningssed in change”.

Many women have left an imprint in Stockholm's public rooms. Some through their art, others through other activities.

the DEA, the Association for kvinnohistoriskt museum, has brought out several publications on women in Stockholm, at the latest, Fruängen. Now it is inner city and areas in its vicinity.

the Book is a promenadguide with 14 different hikes. One of them goes on Östermalm. Here you get to know that it was a ten-year Signe Hasso who designed the Tössebageriets logo in 1925. For the trouble she got ten crowns.

One of the walks on Södermalm passing Katarinavägen where Sigrid Hjertén had his studio, another goes in Vasastan past Astrid Lindgren's home with tips on how to go on display at the author. In scripture, one can not, however, read was an important part women are buried. It had been further a writing.

Much has been written about the jewish cemeteries Kronoberg and aronsberg into being on the island of Kungsholmen and of course, these rest areas in focus in this book. Aronsberg into being was laid out in 1776, Kronoberg 1787.

They were outside of the town of stone town and is still there, but now considered to be the state significantly more centrally.

In a chapter on economic and social relations, one can read that they buried the men in the two cemeteries were much more than the women (195 to 156), and that the child mortality rate was high. Of the total of 503 graves are 152 children under 15 years, of which the majority died before the age of five.

the Title ”the Tombstones tell” is a truth with modification. Very few of the women have a title (apart from the wife, widow or spinster). In aronsberg into being rests, however, a brödförsäljerska and a klädsömmerska.

Bokförlaget Max Ström

If it is Per Kallstenius or Jeppe Wikström a bokrygg you can be sure that you get plenty of extra life. This book is both men's names, and they have, as the title of the book reveals, taken on the waters off Stockholm. They write in the preface that ”It is a story about how the city seizes the islands and how we locals live our lives with a constant presence of the lake.”

I usually recommend tourists to take a boat trip under the bridges to see Stockholm from the city's best side. Jeppe Wikström has selected the air to depict the water, and it is fascinating to see how much water surrounds Stockholm. But it is not the only Wikströms images that illustrate Kallstenius interesting texts. Here are also sketches, cross-section and a variety of maps of both newer and older model.

almost exactly 100 years ago, on december 7, 1918, it was the community of owners Eriksbergsparken u.p.a. 78 years later restructured the association to the Association Eriksbergsparken. If this association, if the property and its accommodations, but also on the surrounding area around the Eriksbergsplan where Vasastan, Norrmalm and Östermalm meet, this is writing that came out just in time for the 100th anniversary. The jam-packed scripture can serve as an inspiration for housing associations and others who want to document their real estate history.

in Addition to a variety of apartment and medlemshistorik, photos and bygglovsritningar for the floors with the descriptions as bedroom, hvardagsrum and herrum, there are a lot of curiosities. As to the two elevators in the autumn of 1920 only to be used for the ascent. The ban was repealed three years later.

Stockholmia Förlag

It is always fun to be able to get a book about the Stockholm that caters to a younger readership.

The magic house is not just any house at any time. It is South of the city hall, located next to Slussen metro station, which now houses the Stockholm city museum.

this is a story about Elise that will go on Gröna Lund together with his mother, but before they go to the amusement park must the mother have to download anything at work. Mom works at the city Museum. Elise put herself in a room to wait. Then she caught sight of a real live rabbit inside the museum. She takes up the chase on the rabbit and then nothing really similar. Elise ends up in a hole and eventually on a journey far back in time. She may be having on the black death and meet both the witches and the likes in the 1700s Stockholm as Sevenbom and Bellman.

the Architecture of the Publishers

There are many buildings which can be said to define the 1960s. Just as there are for the 1930s and the 1990s and the decades in between.

The book presents the ten buildings of which half are in the Stockholm area: This describes how the Skärholmen and Kungens kurva had to grow on each side of the E4 highway, at the boundary between Stockholm and Huddinge. It also describes Metrohuset in Södertälje and Östermalmstorgs metro station and its artistic decoration signed Siri Derkert. It is fascinating to read about the artist's challenge and see the pictures of her on the ladder wearing something that resembled a space suit when she blasted the station's walls.

the Buildings that are described outside 08-the area is situated in Tibro, Gothenburg, Klippan, Örebro, sweden and Ljungby.

there Are reason to write a book about a residential area built in the 1980s? The question opens the preface to this book and the authors (and the editors of the book) answer the question with a ”yes”.

That there is something very special about Ekensberg, the cape with the sunny yellow brick houses between Essingesundet and Mörtviken of the lake, shows with all desirable clarity.

the Book consists of a number of short stories and interviews with people who have lived or live in Ekensberg. It is a tribute in pictures and text to the district, but it is not only on letters but also on a special number combination. In the book there is a picture of a mansben with the numbers 133 tattooed vertically on one calf. The numbers symbolizes ”the bus route 133, which will take us from here, but especially on the bus that takes us home again.”
