There are no data on how many people lived in the buildings. The authorities are trying to work out how many that is missing is to ask neighbors and relatives.
Many of the buildings are poorly built without building permits.
Rio de Janeiro, the lieutenant-governor Cláudio Castro said that the nearby buildings may be torn down in order to prevent similar disasters from occurring again.
