the EEA agreement entered into force 1. January 1994. The agreement was framforhandlet between the then seven EFTA-countries and twelve EUROPEAN countries. Today, there are 28 EU countries and three EFTA countries included in the EEA. On the one hand, there are over a half a billion people, on the other, under 6 million. It provides a starting-point for negotiation which is significantly different than what it was in the early 90's.

the EEA has given Norway, norwegians and the Norwegian economy 25 good years. Standard of living and employment are on a different level today than in 1994, due to, among other things, the EEA. Agreement creates jobs all over the country, giving every Norwegian a sea of rights and opportunities, and gives Norwegian businesses access to a market consisting of 31 countries and over 500 million people.

Hundreds of thousands of norwegians have through our integration with the EUROPEAN union availed themselves of the freedom to study, find work, settle or start a family almost anywhere in Europe. Even more will do so in the future. This is in all respects a great good, both for those who make use of these possibilities – and for Norway as a whole.

Time with the EEA also been a quarter of a century without the right to vote in Europe's most important forums. We do not have the opportunity to affect which direction our continent should take in the future. When the others sitting around the table and talking together, we referred to the time. We are not designing the policy we follow, and we don't get to be with and adopt the laws we introduce. It is not in our interest to stand outside any longer.

What is the EUROPEAN union anno 2019? the Union is today an international powerhouse in the fight against climate change, a watchdog that makes sure that multinational companies pay taxes and act in a proper way, a counterweight to nationalism and protectionism, and, not least, a driving force for a liberal and democratic world order. It is much needed in a time which is otherwise characterized by Trump, Putin, Mohammed bin Salman and Xi Jinping.

This leaves the EU because the the member states want it and the institutions work. The member states come together to solve their challenges in the community and the institutions take. Through the collaboration, they play each other good and strong. It makes that small countries such as Estonia and Cyprus have the same opportunities in an increasingly globalized world that what Germany and France.

This is probably also the reason that the vast majority of EU citizens are satisfied with their country's membership in the union. In a recent survey shows that 62 per cent see the membership as something positive. We have to go back to the fall of the berlin wall in 1989 and the signing of the Maastricht agreement in 1992, to find an equally high level. Among the most positive is our Swedish and Danish neighbours.

So one can of course disagree in a part of the EU themselves. It is completely natural, and it is we in the european movement also, in the same line with that we are not happy with everything the Uk does. Nothing is perfect and there is always much one can take hold of. But it does not mean that we wish that the EU or Norway to cease to exist because of it. When we believe it is better to seek influence and affect in the direction we want.

We want the Uk to sit around the table together with the other countries of the EU, as a full member, no longer stand passive on at a time while the other determines the. On the way we can be with and control the course Europe should take in the time to come and make the cooperation even better.

That is why the european movement supports the socialist left proposal for a public discussion of alternatives to the EEA agreement. Well to mark with the proviso that the Norwegian EU-membership is one of the options that will be assessed. We are very confident that the full-fledged membership in the union will be seen as the best and only rational alternative to the B-the membership we have today.
