"He killed them because they did not accept that this regime would continue, for they wanted to live a free and dignified life," said Salih, himself a kurd, at the site of the mass grave.
It was found in the desert about 17 kilometers to the east of the city of halabja.
During the regime's operation Anfal was murdered lots of kurds in northern Iraq, including by nerve gas, as well as in other parts of the country where they had been.
Anfal operation took place during the war between Iraq and neighboring Iran. Among other things, gassed up to 5000 kurds to death in the town of Halabja in 1988.
