Konsertrecension: a Damper on trettondagskonsertens horseplay

Scenkanten is rounded as a cirkusmanege, Bernstein's ”Candide”-overture provides a light-hearted start, and in the ceiling glitters suspended suspended chandeliers. At the same time, it is as if the state of things in the world, climate change and regeringsbrist put a damper on the spexandet during this year's twelfth night concert in the berwald hall. When the evening's host Sarah Dawn Finer sings ”What a wonderful world” as the encore, it is with a caveat that we need to take care of this amazing world. Prior to that, may Princelåten ”Sometimes it snows in april” to be a reminder of all that is no longer available with us.

But also other conditions justify an unusually heavy program with beneficial seriously: barytonstjärnan Peter Mattei and new hovsångerska Malin Byström. A drömduo with the world as stage and the ability to lead the life of plain operanummer also concertante. Especially after the break with a sort of ”best of” tragic kärlekstrassel and the famous brevarian from Tchaikovsky's opera ”Eugene Onegin”.

a suction from both the Swedish radio symphony orchestra and combined körkraft. Slutduetten between Onegin and Tatyana (which is here sung in Swedish) is actually completely overwhelming. It is only where the Matteis naturally open the voice comes fully to its right – despite previous taste of the acclaimed Wolframrollen from Wagner's ”Tannhäuser”.

the Strongest impression this evening makes still Byströms warm, generous sound – a lyrical soprano of the type that can sound like a recording from a bygone era. 2018 has really been her year with the appointment to the Year-female singer at the world opera shrine's Oscars, the International Opera Awards and a bespoke symphonic song cycle by the names Britta Byström. But contemporary classical music and composing women do, generally non-trouble on trettondagskonserter. Therefore, it was refreshing to the brazenly overlooked the frenchwoman Germaine Tailleferres distinctive overture for orchestra, originally from the opera ”Zoulaïna”, got blow up Wagnervallen in the first act.

Footnote: Friday's concert was recorded and broadcast on SVT 2 Saturday 5 jan. It will also be seen on SVT Play.
